Understanding Trading Card Rarity Symbols
That little symbol in the corner of a card tells you how rare it is — if you know how to read it. Here's a plain guide to the rarity marks you'll see most often.
The classic three
Many trading card games, Pokémon included, use a simple symbol system, usually near the bottom of the card:
- Circle = common. The most plentiful cards, printed in the highest numbers.
- Diamond = uncommon. Less frequent than commons, but still widely available.
- Star = rare. The scarcer pulls, including many holos and the more collectible cards.
These marks describe pull rate within a set, not absolute value — a common from a beloved vintage set can outvalue a rare from an over-printed modern one.
Beyond the basics
Modern sets layer on additional rarities above the classic star: holo rares, ultra rares, full-arts, alt-arts and "secret" rares numbered beyond the set's listed total. These are deliberately scarce chase cards, and they're where much of a modern set's value concentrates. The symbol, the card number (e.g. 200/197 signals a secret rare beyond the main set), and the finish together tell you where a card sits in the rarity ladder.
Rarity is one input, not the whole story
Rarity tells you scarcity, but value needs demand and condition too. A rare card nobody wants stays cheap; a lower-rarity card of a popular character in gem-mint can command a premium.
