How to Spot Fake Pokémon Cards
Counterfeit Pokémon cards have gotten good — but they still give themselves away. Run through these eight checks before you buy, and learn why a cert-linked passport removes the guesswork entirely.
8 ways to tell a real card from a fake
- The light test. Real cards have a thin black core inside the cardstock. Hold the card to a bright light — a genuine card blocks most of it; many fakes glow through because they're too thin.
- Texture and finish. Modern Pokémon cards have a specific satin feel and, on holos, a defined pattern. Fakes are often too glossy, too matte, or have a rough printed "sparkle" that looks painted on.
- Font and spacing. Compare the fonts, the HP number, the attack text and the energy symbols against a card you know is real. Counterfeits frequently use slightly wrong typefaces or uneven letter spacing.
- Colour saturation. The blue on the back and the yellow border on the front should be crisp and consistent. Off, washed-out or overly dark colours are a red flag.
- The back print. Check the blue border, the Poké Ball and the swirl pattern. Blurriness, wrong shades of blue, or miscut/off-centre backs are common counterfeit tells.
- Edges and cut. Peel-testing isn't necessary — just look. A visible black layer on the edge is a good sign; pure white edges throughout can indicate a fake.
- Spelling and set symbols. Typos, missing copyright lines, wrong set symbols or an incorrect card number for the set are instant giveaways.
- Price sanity check. If a "PSA 10 Charizard" is priced far below market, assume it's fake or the slab is tampered until proven otherwise.
The shortcut: buy verified
Every check above matters when you're holding a raw card. But when you buy online you often can't. The reliable shortcut is to buy graded cards whose grade and cert number you can verify, or listings that ship with a certificate of authenticity you can check before paying.
Buy with certainty. On The Bubble Art, every graded card links its grading company, grade and cert serial to a verifiable Digital Passport of authenticity — so you confirm the card is real before you buy. And sellers keep 97% with 0% commission.
