A Pokémon card's value comes down to four things: set, rarity, condition and — for graded cards — the grade. Here's how to read them, and how to let a live auction set the true market price.
What drives the price
- Set & era. Vintage sets (Base, Jungle, Fossil) and sought-after modern sets carry premiums; common recent bulk usually doesn't.
- Rarity. Holo, reverse-holo, full-art, alt-art and Secret Rare cards sit above commons.
- Condition. Centering, corners, edges and surface make a big difference — small whitening can halve a raw card's value.
- Grade. A PSA/CGC/BGS grade turns a subjective condition into a number buyers price confidently; a gem-mint 10 can be worth many times the raw card.
